INNOVATION PROJECTS: ESSENCE AND MANAGEMENT APPROACHES

Keywords: innovation, innovative projects, project management, uncertainty, risk management, agile methodologies, hybrid project management models, adaptive project management

Abstract

The article systematizes theoretical approaches to defining the essence of innovation projects and substantiates the specific features of their management under conditions of high uncertainty and risk. Innovation projects are interpreted as a distinct type of project activity aimed at creating and implementing new or significantly improved products, technologies, or organizational solutions. Their defining attribute is the novelty of outcomes, which generates substantial technical, market, organizational, and strategic uncertainty. Unlike conventional projects, innovation initiatives cannot be fully formalized at the outset due to incomplete information, evolving stakeholder expectations, and the absence of established implementation patterns. Their development is inherently iterative and involves continuous refinement of objectives, design decisions, resource allocation, and expected results. The study emphasizes the multidimensional nature of risks in innovation projects, encompassing technological, financial, organizational, and market dimensions. Risk is conceptualized not only as a potential threat but also as a source of opportunity, which necessitates adaptive governance mechanisms and flexible decision-making processes. The limitations of traditional project management approaches based on comprehensive upfront planning and strict control of time, cost, and scope are identified. Although such approaches ensure structural clarity and procedural stability, their applicability diminishes in highly dynamic and knowledge-intensive environments. Agile methodologies, characterized by iterative planning, incremental value delivery, and continuous feedback, enhance responsiveness to change but cannot be regarded as universally applicable solutions. The research substantiates the relevance of hybrid project management models that integrate structural discipline with operational flexibility. The effectiveness of hybrid approaches depends on contextual factors, managerial competencies, organizational readiness, and the integration of risk management into strategic and operational decision-making processes.
