APPLICATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS IN THE PORT SYSTEM OF UKRAINE
Abstract
The article examines the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations within the port system of Ukraine under conditions of war, economic uncertainty, and progressive integration into the European transport area. Ukrainian seaports are positioned as strategic gateways for agricultural, metallurgical, and energy exports and as critical nodes connecting trade corridors between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The research substantiates that the modernization of port infrastructure is increasingly aligned with the SDGs framework, which extends beyond economic performance to encompass environmental responsibility, social sustainability, and technological transformation. The study highlights the role of public-private partnerships and concession projects in stimulating regional economic growth and attracting international expertise. Infrastructure renewal, development of multimodal logistics hubs, and digital transformation initiatives such as the DocPort single maritime window demonstrate measurable efficiency gains. Environmental management practices, including ISO 14001 certification and participation in EcoPorts, illustrate structured approaches to pollution prevention, resource efficiency, and alignment with European environmental standards. The article further analyzes climate-related commitments, emphasizing the relevance of the 2023 IMO greenhouse gas strategy and the introduction of shore power systems, energy-efficient cargo handling equipment, and renewable energy solutions in ports. The findings indicate that sustainable port development in Ukraine is shaped by EU regulatory convergence, corridor redundancy, institutionalized environmental governance, and international financial support, including cooperation with the EU, the World Bank, EBRD, and JICA. The combination of digital innovation, ecological modernization, and multilevel partnerships forms a contemporary theoretical and practical paradigm ensuring long-term competitiveness, resilience, and post-war reconstruction of Ukraine’s maritime sector.
