MOTIVES AND BARRIERS TO CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR ON THE PATH TO IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN THE CONTEXT OF ENERGY TRANSITION
Abstract
The article delves into consumer behavior in the context of energy efficiency and the energy transition, with a specific focus on identifying the key motivations and obstacles that shape consumer actions in this area. The research shows that one of the primary motivations for adopting energy-efficient practices is the potential for significant reductions in energy costs following the implementation of energy-saving measures. Consumers are also driven by the desire to reduce their environmental impact, as well as by the prospect of enhancing comfort in their homes. Additionally, the study highlights a crucial issue: a significant portion of consumers lacks sufficient awareness and understanding of the concept of the energy transition and its long-term benefits. This gap in knowledge represents a major obstacle to the widespread adoption of energy-efficient practices. To address this, regular and targeted information campaigns are essential, as they can significantly increase consumer engagement and provide the necessary knowledge. The research identifies several barriers that prevent consumers from adopting energy-efficient measures. The most prominent of these barriers is the high upfront cost of purchasing and installing energy-efficient technologies or retrofitting buildings to meet higher energy standards. Many consumers are deterred by these initial expenses, especially when the return on investment may take several years to materialize. Another key barrier is the lack of sufficient government support or financial mechanisms that could make these technologies more accessible to a broader range of consumers. The insights provided by this research can inform the development of more effective policies and initiatives designed to promote energy efficiency and facilitate the energy transition. By addressing the financial and informational barriers, and by enhancing the incentives available to consumers, governments and organizations can better encourage active participation in the energy transition process. This, in turn, will contribute to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
