INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENT IN THE PROCESS OF ENSURING SUSTAINABILITY IN THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY
Abstract
The purpose of the article is to study the impact of innovative development on ensuring the sustainability of the shipping industry. The concept of sustainability of the shipping industry is characterized, the relationship between sustainability, financial and economic security and innovative development is established. The need to distinguish three categories of sustainability - financial, environmental and social - is substantiated, and their comprehensive characteristics are presented. The most priority areas of activity, which are determined by leading shipping companies in 2024 and to which the greatest management efforts are directed, are analyzed. It is established that the most relevant areas for ensuring sustainability are work in response to climate change and protection of the environment and ecosystems. It is found that the orientation towards innovation, which involves a purposeful and systematic process of developing and implementing innovative technologies and solutions in the activities of companies, mainly belongs to high or medium priority. The most common innovative solutions that change the shipping industry and directly affect its sustainability are listed. The indicators of innovative development of leading shipping companies for 2020-2024 were determined and the dynamics of their average values were analyzed - the share of research and development costs, the number of implemented innovative projects, patent activity, the use of alternative energy sources, the level of personnel training in data ethics, artificial intelligence and digital competencies. Using the example of a specific shipping company, it was investigated how innovations contribute to financial, environmental and social sustainability. The key challenges of innovative development in the process of ensuring the sustainability of the shipping industry were systematized and classified into six groups - economic, technical, safety, regulatory, organizational, cultural. Practical recommendations were provided to increase the efficiency of innovative development in the process of ensuring the sustainability of shipping. The scientific novelty of the conducted research lies in establishing the impact of innovative development on the sustainability of the shipping industry. The results obtained can be practically used by both shipping companies that consider innovative development as a key tool for ensuring sustainability, and regulatory authorities interested in forming incentive mechanisms for adhering to the principles of sustainable development in the industry.
