DIGITALISATION AND ITS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT: OPPORTUNITIES, RISKS FOR THE ECONOMY AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
Abstract
The rapidly increasing pace of digitalisation is leading to a constant change in the nature of the digital economy, with environmental impacts. Overcoming and addressing these challenges is essential for inclusive and sustainable development. To explore the opportunities of digitalisation for economic development and the risks posed by the growth of digital technologies and their impact on the environment. To substantiate further ways of developing the digital economy to ensure environmental protection, minimise negative impacts on climate change and, at the same time, create possible economic benefits. The information basis for the study was the scientific works of domestic and foreign scholars, general scientific research methods: logical and structural analysis, generalisation, grouping, systematisation and statistical information on the development of digital technologies. The article examines the benefits of digitalisation and its role in social development. The article highlights the opportunities of new digital technologies and their impact on the environment, which requires effective solutions to minimise negative effects. The consequences of the impact of digitalisation on the environment through the system of direct and indirect impact are outlined, which generates both negative effects and new opportunities. Attention is focused on a number of other risks associated with digitalisation. Having examined the effects of digitalisation, there is an increasing need to consider the relationship between the rapidly evolving digital economy and environmental sustainability, and how they are linked to economic development. The growing scale and changing nature of digitalisation has environmental implications at all stages of the life cycle of digital devices and infrastructure. The author concludes that it is necessary to move to a circular digital economy, which, in addition to potential environmental benefits in terms of environment, sustainable consumption and production, can bring significant economic benefits.
